Senior Officer in Prison Services

Senior prison officers manage the day-to-day running of prisons and manage teams of prison staff. They keep the prison safe and secure, help prisoners change their lives, and make sure everyone in the prison - staff and prisoners - is treated fairly.

The Role & Expectations

As a senior officer in prison services, you manage a team of prison officers and help run your prison. You have a big job: making sure the prison is safe and secure, looking after the staff under you, and also helping prisoners move away from crime when they leave. You work with psychologists and teachers to run programmes that help prisoners learn new skills and prepare for life after prison.

Day to day, you will supervise your team, walk around the prison checking for problems, handle difficult situations when prisoners clash with each other or staff, and plan rehabilitation activities. It is a job where you have to be alert and fair at the same time - strict about rules and safety, but also understanding that prisoners are people who can change. You need to stay calm under pressure, be a good leader to your team, and care about helping people turn their lives around.
