The Role & Expectations
As an emergency medicine physician, you work in A&E departments where patients come in with urgent problems. You assess them quickly, decide what's wrong, and start treatment fast. You might do CPR, stitch wounds, set broken bones, or give medicine. Every patient is different and every shift brings new challenges.
You'll work closely with nurses, paramedics and other doctors. It's fast-paced, stressful work, and you'll see people at their worst moments. But you also get to help people when they really need it. You need to stay calm under pressure, make good decisions quickly, and care about getting people better. Many A&E doctors find it hard sometimes but also feel proud of the work they do.
Daily Responsibilities
- Assess and treat patients with acute illnesses and injuries in the emergency department.
- Perform life-saving procedures such as intubation, chest tube insertion, and advanced cardiac life support.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.
- Utilize diagnostic tools, including imaging and laboratory tests, to determine the most effective treatment.
- Educate patients and their families on health management and preventive care following treatment.
- Document patient interactions and treatment plans accurately in electronic health records.
- Participate in continuous professional development and training to stay updated on medical advancements.
