Garment Technologist

Garment technologists make sure clothes are made well. They work with designers to create clothes that look good, fit properly, are comfortable to wear, and are made in a way that does not waste materials.

The UK Degree Advantage

A UK degree in fashion technology or a related field provides candidates with a robust understanding of the local market, industry standards, and innovative practices. UK institutions are renowned for their strong connections with leading fashion brands, offering invaluable networking opportunities and practical experience that can set you apart in this competitive field.

The Role & Expectations

As a garment technologist, you are the expert who turns a designer's sketch into a real item of clothing that actually works. You know fabrics inside out - how they behave, what will last, what feels good on skin. You work closely with designers to understand what they want, then translate that into instructions manufacturers can follow.

Your day involves measuring samples on different body shapes to check the fit is right, writing detailed guides that tell manufacturers exactly how to make each garment, checking that finished clothes meet high standards, and troubleshooting problems when something does not turn out right. You keep up with new materials, new techniques and trends in fashion technology, and you think about how to reduce waste and use more sustainable fabrics in everything you do.

Daily Responsibilities

  • Conduct fit sessions to assess garment sizing and shape on models.
  • Collaborate with designers to translate creative concepts into technical specifications.
  • Review and approve fabric samples, ensuring they meet quality and performance standards.
  • Create detailed technical packs that include measurements, construction details, and materials.
  • Liaise with manufacturers to troubleshoot production issues and maintain quality control.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, materials, and technologies to enhance garment functionality.
  • Test garments for durability, comfort, and compliance with safety regulations.
