The Role & Expectations
As a manager or proprietor in agriculture and horticulture, you run a farm or growing business. You might grow crops like wheat or vegetables, raise livestock like cattle or sheep, or run a commercial garden centre or nursery. Your job is to keep everything running smoothly and make smart choices about the future of the business.
Your days are busy and varied. You'll plan what to grow and when, oversee staff, check that equipment is working properly, manage money and budgets, and stay on top of health and safety rules. You'll spend time outdoors watching the land and crops, and time indoors doing paperwork and planning. You need to understand soil, weather, markets and business – and be ready to adapt quickly when things change.
