The Role & Expectations
As a veterinary forensic scientist, you help the police and animal welfare organizations investigate crimes involving animals. You use your knowledge of animal health and science to find out what happened and gather evidence that helps protect animals and bring people who hurt animals to justice.
Your work involves carefully collecting samples from animals and examining them closely. You might do post-mortem examinations to work out what caused an animal's death. You then write detailed reports of your findings and sometimes go to court to explain your evidence to a judge or jury. You work closely with police, vets and lawyers, and you need to keep up to date with the latest forensic techniques so you can do your job well.
Daily Responsibilities
- Collect and analyse biological samples from animals involved in legal cases.
- Conduct post-mortem examinations to determine causes of death and gather evidence.
- Prepare detailed reports and present findings in court as expert witnesses.
- Collaborate with law enforcement agencies to assist in animal cruelty investigations.

- Develop and implement protocols for evidence collection and preservation.
